Do I need to take supplements for macular health?

Not everyone needs supplements for macular health. There’s a very specific group of patients who actually benefit. The original Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) and the follow up AREDS2 trial showed that high dose antioxidant supplements can reduce the risk of progression by about 25 percent in people with intermediate dry macular degeneration (AMD), or late disease in one eye. Whilst meaningful, they don’t prevent macular degeneration, they don’t reverse it, and they don’t treat wet AMD involving neovascularization.

AREDS2 also refined the formula by removing beta carotene and replacing it with lutein and zeaxanthin, which is particularly important for smokers due to the associated lung cancer risk seen in earlier studies.

If your macula is healthy, or you’re in very early stages, the evidence does not suggest supplements will help. They’re not beneficial as “just in case”, or preventative medicine.

What matters for most people is the basics done well. Don’t smoke. Protect your eyes from UV. Eat a diet rich in leafy greens and omega 3s. And get your eyes checked regularly.

Supplements for macular degeneration are a clinical decision, not a wellness trend. Backed by evidence, but only for the right patient.

Always consult your Optometrist before taking high-dose supplements for macular health.
